We showed up in this little town called
Playa at 7am to catch our boatride to Ollies Point and Witch's Rock. 2
legendary surf spots.
|
This town is mainly a fishing village
with a little bit of tourism. It is still relatively untouched by the
modern world, like in a movie only it was real.
|
Here we are on the way, first stop Witch's
Rock, about 1-1/2 hours away. 6 surfers each paid $35 for the trip and
that included luch and beverages.
|
|
There she is, Witch's Rock. We are achored
just outside of the surf break here. Witch's Rock is located off a small
rivermouth along a very deserted stretch of coast.
|
This is taken from the same spot as the
picture at left. Here you see surfer's in the line up, the back of the
breaking waves and the uninhabited shoreline. This is a very hollow beach
break wave that was about 3-4 feet the day we were there.

After surfing for a couple of hours we
ate lunch then motored on northwards towards Ollie's Point. This place
is named for the infamous Col. Ollie North. It lies just south of the
border with Nicaragua and is suppsed to be the area where Col Ollie was
smuggling guns in to the Contras.
|
Here Iam dropping into my first Ollie's
wave. As you can see the wind blows hard offshore. The swell was about
4-6 feet and it breaks with the perfection of a true point break.
|
These photos were taken from the boat
anchored about 200 yards away from the break. A boat is the only resonable
way to get there and on this day there was one othe boat present. That
meant no more than about 10 surfer's in the water at one time.

| The end of the day and our boat cap'n signals thumbs up for the ride home. | This is the sunset as seen from the boat on the way back from Ollies'. There is something indescribable about a sunset seen from on the ocean. A picture of it, while nice, can only hint at the natural majesty of the event as it unfolds. | |
