MMC had encouraged nurses to vote against unionization, as it believes working directly with its care team members is the best way to build on the organization鈥檚 success as the region鈥檚 premier health care provider.
PORTLAND, Maine 鈥 An initial count released today by the National Labor Relations Board indicates that a majority of Maine Medical Center nurses participating in a labor board election have supported union representation by National Nurses United and the Maine State Nurses Association. MMC is reviewing the election results within the guidelines and the seven-day timeframe set by the NLRB in accordance with the law.
鈥淲e had hoped for a different outcome as we believe that the best way for Maine Medical Center to remain the region鈥檚 premier provider of medical care is to work directly with our care team members,鈥 said Jeff Sanders, MMC president. 鈥淲e will continue to put the care of our patients and welfare of our care team at the forefront of our decision making including putting our core values of respect, integrity, excellence, ownership, innovation and being patient-centered into action.鈥
By many objective measures, MMC is a leading provider of high quality patient care. The medical center is a three-time nursing Magnet-recognized hospital, a two-time Leapfrog 鈥楢鈥 rated hospital for safety and is consistently named as Maine鈥檚 best hospital by US News & World Report.
鈥淢MC remains committed to providing the highest quality care and best possible work environment that fosters the health and wellbeing of all care team members,鈥 Sanders said.
